Hypoallergenic foods are especially suitable for dogs with sensitive digestive systems and dogs with food intolerances. Nowadays, hypoallergenic diets based on hydrolysed protein are often used in the diagnosis of food allergies. Protein hydrolysis reduces the likelihood of an immune reaction, but does not eliminate it! This means that if your dog is allergic to a certain type of protein, there is a high risk of an allergic reaction to the hydrolysed protein as well. Furthermore, the problem with hydrolysed protein diets is that the palatability of the food may be reduced and there is a risk of digestive disorders, as confirmed by researchers (1) Cave N.J.: Hydrolysed protein diets for dogs and cats. Vet.Clin.North Am. Small Anim. Pract. 2006, 36, 1251-68.(2) Olivry T., Bizikova P.: A systematic review of the evidence of reduced allergenicity and clinical benefit of food hydrolysates in dogs with cutaneous adverse food reactions. Vet. Dermatol. 2010, 21, 32-41)

When worrying symptoms occur, such as nervous paw gnawing, scratching, eye patches or problems in the form of loose, unformed faeces with a strong, unpleasant smell, it's a good idea to take a look at the current feeding regime. It is often sufficient to change the diet and switch to a hypoallergenic food.
